Before tax. Swedish employers, job ads and Statistics Sweden always talk about the monthly salary before tax (bruttolön). Your employer takes the income tax off every month using the tax table for the municipality you live in, so what reaches your account is the salary after tax (nettolön).
Most of it is municipal and regional tax, between about 29 and 36 per cent depending on where you live. On the part of a salary above a yearly threshold that only higher salaries reach, state income tax of 20 per cent is added. A tax reduction on earned income (jobbskatteavdrag) lowers the total, so on an average salary the tax withheld is about a fifth of the pay. The calculator on this page gives the exact amount.
No, there is no minimum wage set by law. Pay is set by collective agreements between unions and employers, which cover most jobs, and by your own contract. For a work permit, the Swedish Migration Agency requires a salary at a level it sets each year and terms at least as good as the collective agreement or what is usual in the trade.
Employer social security contributions of 31.42 per cent on top of the salary, which fund your pension, parental leave and sick pay, and usually an occupational pension under the collective agreement. You do not pay these yourself.
