It has long been rumored about a film based on Ronnie Spector's memoir "Be my baby" from 1990. Now, the film company A24 confirms that the project will be realized and the director will be Barry Jenkins, who, among other things, is behind the film company's success "Moonlight", writes Deadline.
The film focuses on the Ronettes singer's life together with Phil Spector, the star producer who was later convicted of the murder of actress Lana Clarkson. In her book, Ronnie Spector describes how she fled barefoot from her and Phil Spector's joint home, after he had held her captive and prevented her from performing.
Ronnie Spector was born in 1943 and formed, together with her sister and cousin, the group "The Ronettes" already in her teens. They were later discovered by Phil Spector, who signed them to his record label and co-wrote the hit song "Be my baby" for them.
Just before her death in 2022, Ronnie Spector had wished that Zendaya would play her. The script is written by Dave Kajganich, who previously did "A bigger splash" and "Suspiria".
