Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is open to holding elections in the country – despite the raging war. The prerequisite is that Europe and the United States guarantee security.

"I am ready for elections," he told reporters, adding that he would ask politicians in parliament to come up with "proposals regarding the possibility of changing the legal basis and the law on elections during martial law," AFP writes.

But in that case, the United States and its allies in Europe must help with security.

If that happens, Ukraine will be ready to hold elections within the next 60 to 90 days, Zelenskyy said, according to the Kyiv Independent .

The announcement came after a reporter asked about US President Donald Trump's latest criticism. In an interview with Politico, Trump questions democracy in Ukraine and calls on the country to hold elections.

Zelensky has repeatedly pointed out that Ukraine's constitution does not allow elections during wartime. He has also said that he has no intention of leading the country when the war is over.
