Eight Goliath mushrooms – also called the world's most expensive mushroom and common in Swedish forests – have been sold for 850,000 yen, equivalent to just over 53,000 kronor, at the season's first auction in the city of Tamba-Sasayama in western Japan, reports the Japanese newspaper Mainichi.

The winning bid was made by a local hotel.

The first auction took place six days earlier than last year. The mushrooms that were auctioned off were still in the bud stage and were 6.5 to 11 centimeters long. With a total weight of just over 260 grams, the eight mushrooms were the heaviest among the first seasonal harvests since the market opened in 2018.

In Japan, where the giant mushroom is a sought-after delicacy, the mushroom usually costs around 6,200 to 9,400 kronor per kilo – but the value of the mushrooms in question (around 200,000 kronor per kilo) rose partly to celebrate the first harvest of the autumn and the start of the auction, according to the newspaper.
