World No 1 Scottie Scheffler finished unusually far down the leaderboard after the first round of the US Open.

For Ludvig Åberg, things went better, and he is right up among the leaders.

American World No 1 Scottie Scheffler was, according to betting sites, the favourite, but after the first round in North Carolina, he finished the day on a total of 71 strokes – one over par.

It's unusual for Scheffler, who has won five of his last eight tournaments, not to be in the top mix, but after the first round, that's exactly how it looks, with the American in a tie for 34th place.

For Ludvig Åberg, things went much better. He played the first round in 66 strokes, four under par, and lies in third place – after Patrick Cantlay and Rory McIlroy took a shared lead with 65 strokes.

Swede Tim Widing had a clearly approved round for a US Open debutant with 71 strokes, the same number as Scheffler. Alex Norén went round in 73 strokes, three over par.

Corrected version: In an earlier version, the number of strokes under par for Åberg was incorrectly stated. The correct number is four under par.
