Woods himself announced the disappointing news through a post on social media.
On Tuesday morning local time, the 15-time major winner underwent surgery in West Palm Beach, Florida.
"I'm back home now and plan to focus on my recovery and my rehab. Thanks for all the support", Tiger Woods writes in his post.
Woods also added that the operation went well.
The injured golf legend underwent yet another back operation in September, one of many in recent years. He has not played a competition of sporting significance since the British Open in July last year.
Recently, the planned comeback was cancelled after his mother Kultida passed away.
Woods did not specify how long he will be out due to the health operation. Typically, an injury of that nature takes several months to heal.
The 49-year-old American is therefore likely to miss this year's first major, the US Masters in Augusta, which begins in about four weeks.
It is highly doubtful that he will play in any major this year.
He finished 60th in the golf classic last year and missed the qualifying limit in the other three majors.
Woods sensationally won the Masters in 2019. Two years later, he severely injured his left leg in a car crash. After several operations and long rehabilitation, he was back on the courses.
