Trump's economists are calculating, among other things, the possible costs of providing Greenland's inhabitants with government services, according to a high-ranking official in the White House to The Washington Post.
The White House budget office is also trying to estimate how large the revenues could be that would accrue to the USA through Greenland's natural resources, according to other anonymous officials to the newspaper.
Trump's administration is further analyzing what would constitute a better "deal" for Greenland's government in relation to what Denmark contributes today, writes the newspaper.
"The point is that we will pay more than Denmark", says one of the sources.
Donald Trump repeated on Sunday his mantra that the USA will "get" Greenland.
Yes, 100 percent, said Trump in an interview with NBC News.
Greenland is a highly self-governing part of Denmark, which is a NATO country. But Trump claims that he needs the island for the USA's national security and has announced that he does not rule out a military intervention to take control of the island.
The USA's claims have caused great concern and irritation in Denmark and on Greenland.
"Trump says that the USA 'gets Greenland'. Let me be clear: The USA does not get it. We do not belong to anyone else. We decide our own future", responded Greenland's newly appointed government leader Jens-Frederik Nielsen, in a Facebook post, to Trump's latest outburst on Sunday.
