A 25-year-old woman was found dead this weekend after a search operation in Salem, southwest of Stockholm. Authorities have requested that a 26-year-old be detained on probable cause on suspicion of murder and aggravated assault. This is what we know about the incident.

The police received a report of a missing woman on Boxing Day, when she did not return home during the night. The alarm came from a relative.

An extensive search operation in Rönninge and surrounding areas began on Friday. After a number of findings were made in connection with the case, a preliminary investigation into kidnapping was initiated.

Dogs, quad bikes, helicopters and drones were used in the search.

The police also initiated a so-called rescue service, which meant that civilian volunteers were deployed in the search effort. Among others, the voluntary organization Search and Rescue (SAR) participated.

At a press conference on Sunday, the police announced that the woman was found dead on Saturday evening in connection with an operation against a suspect. The crime classification was then changed to murder. The police would not disclose where the woman was found.

Two people were arrested in connection with the case. They were arrested at different times and locations.

One person was arrested on probable cause on suspicion of murder. The other person was arrested on reasonable suspicion, the lower level of suspicion, for kidnapping.

On Monday afternoon, the arrest warrant for the person suspected of kidnapping was lifted. The person has been removed from the preliminary investigation.

The 26-year-old murder suspect was remanded in custody on probable cause on Tuesday on suspicion of murder and aggravated assault. Detention hearings will take place at 1 p.m. on Tuesday.

The 26-year-old has previously been convicted of aggravated child pornography, attempted kidnapping, and threatening an official.
