A 26-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a 25-year-old woman in Salem. He has pleaded guilty to aggravated assault but denies murder. Here is what we know about the incident.

The police received a report of a missing 25-year-old woman on Boxing Day after she did not return home overnight. The alert came from a relative.

An extensive search operation in Rönninge and surrounding areas began on Friday. After a number of findings in connection with the case, a preliminary investigation into kidnapping was opened.

Dogs, quad bikes, helicopters, and drones were used in the search.

The police also initiated a so-called rescue service, which meant that civilians were deployed in the search effort. Among others, the voluntary organization Search and Rescue (SAR) participated.

At a press conference on Sunday, the police said the woman was found dead on Saturday evening in connection with an operation targeting a suspect. The crime was reclassified as murder. The police would not disclose where the woman was found.

Two people were arrested in connection with the case. They were arrested at different times and locations.

One person, a 26-year-old, was arrested on probable cause on suspicion of murder. The other person was arrested on reasonable suspicion, the lower level of suspicion, for kidnapping.

On Monday afternoon, the arrest warrant for the person suspected of kidnapping was lifted. The person has been removed from the preliminary investigation.

On Tuesday, the 26-year-old was arrested on probable cause on suspicion of murder and aggravated assault.

During the detention hearing, the suspect admitted to aggravated assault but denies murder.

The 26-year-old has previously been convicted of aggravated child pornography, attempted kidnapping, and threats against an official.
