Russian researchers on Monday presented the remarkably well-preserved remains of a mammoth found in the permafrost-covered region of Sakha.

According to experts, "Jana", named after a nearby river, is the best-preserved mammoth remains in the world and one of only seven complete mammoth bodies ever found.

Studies will now be conducted to determine her exact age at the time of death, but it is estimated to be around one year old.

The remains weigh 180 kilograms and measure 120 centimeters high. Researchers call it "a unique discovery".

The carcass was excavated near the research station Batagajka, where remains of other prehistoric animals have also been found.
