According to chief antiquarian Eric Fugeläng at the National Heritage Board, it is a water pipe that has burst and the objects in the warehouse had to be evacuated.

For safety reasons, he does not want to go into which cultural institutions are among the tenants and what type of objects were in the warehouse.

A dozen tenants have been affected. Most had their objects standing a bit above the floor. But those that stood on the floor were damaged, he says.

In total, it is about a hundred objects from a couple of tenants that have been damaged by water.

Both the Royal Opera and the National Historical Museums, which had objects in the warehouse, have escaped major damage. As far as one knows, no invaluable cultural treasures have been destroyed.

What has been damaged by water can in most cases be restored, says Stefan Karlberg, property manager at the Opera.

The National Historical Museums state that the damage to their belongings is "minimal".

The affected warehouse will now have its walls replaced, starting on Monday.
