The so-called security zone covers parts of Diplomatstaden in Östermalm between Strandvägen and Gärdet. Anyone staying there may be searched or have their vehicle searched, even if there are no concrete suspicions of a crime.
According to the police, the background is an increased threat due to the US and Israel's conflict with Iran. According to Säpo, there is a risk that young people are recruited to commit serious violent crimes in Sweden on behalf of state actors.
Previous shooting
The decision mentions, among other things, the recent explosion at the American embassy in Oslo and the suspected shootings at the Israeli embassy on Strandvägen in 2024.
"It has been known for some time that we have had several incidents against the Israeli embassy in Stockholm," says Police Chief Felix Andåker.
Within the zone are several other embassies, as well as a church, parks and private businesses.
The area will be marked with signs, but freedom of movement will not be restricted, Annika Laestadius insists at a press conference. Much of it is about having a deterrent effect, she explains.
"Now we are very clear that we are doing this. It is a crime-prevention way of talking about what we do," she says.
Working with embassies
Cooperation with embassies, primarily the US and Israel, is an important part, according to Laestadius.
"We have daily cooperation with the respective embassy's security coordinator, and I would say that we have very good cooperation," she says.
The police may have to deal with several public gatherings during the period. These could include demonstrations outside embassies or crowds making their way to and from Berwaldhallen.
"We will have some challenges. We will have to continuously assess the people who are in this safety zone based on their behavior, time of day and things like that," says Felix Andåker.
The zone is valid until April 7 in an initial phase.
