The 1200 year old Viking ship Oseberg is now being moved for the first time in 99 years – at a cost of nearly half a billion kronor.

The ship will be moved 100 meters, to the new Viking museum on the Bygdøy peninsula in Oslo. Since the ship is so fragile, the move has been planned for a whole ten years.

It will be a historic move. It is a ship that has been through a lot, museum director Aud V Tønnessen previously said to NTB.

The ship will be lifted in a large vibration-proof box and lowered on Wednesday evening to its new location. The Gokstad ship and the Tune ship will also be moved into the new specially adapted building.

The idea is that the new Viking Ship Museum will open in 2027. The old museum had 15 times more visitors than it was intended for, which affected the condition of the old ships.

The 21.5 meter long Oseberg ship was built in the year 820 AD. It was found and excavated in 1904.
