But a final decision has not yet been made, according to the sources. The White House and the Foreign Ministry have not responded to a request for comment on the matter.
Russia occupied the Ukrainian Crimean Peninsula in 2014.
Earlier on Friday, US President Donald Trump threatened to abandon efforts to reach a breakthrough in peace talks. The President said he would "move on" if a ceasefire did not seem possible within the next few days, something also stated by Foreign Minister Marco Rubio earlier the same day.
The developments followed the proposal presented by Rubio in Paris on Thursday. It included, according to the news agency Bloomberg, among other things, easing of sanctions against Russia and a repetition of previous statements that Ukraine cannot become a member of NATO. Furthermore, Russia would be allowed to retain the areas in Ukraine that the country occupies.
