Retail sales in the USA rose sharply in March, driven by, among other things, increased car sales. The car boom suggests that American consumers are trying to get ahead of the Trump administration's announced 25-percent tariffs on imported cars, writes news agency Bloomberg.
Retail sales increased by 1.4 percent from the previous month. It is the largest monthly increase in over two years.
The car category increased the most, but a total of 11 out of 13 product categories also increased during the month. Among the climbers are sports products, electronics, and building materials, which are also products that could become significantly more expensive if the announced tariffs are introduced.
