The United States has begun releasing Venezuelan money frozen under sanctions against the country, interim Venezuelan President Delcy Rodríguez said on Tuesday.

“We are freeing up Venezuelan resources that belong to the Venezuelan people,” Rodríguez said on Venezuelan state television.

It is not clear how much money is involved.

Rodríguez took over the country's government in early January after the United States attacked the country and captured President Nicolás Maduro.

Venezuela has been under US sanctions since 2019, including an oil embargo. During his first term, US President Donald Trump also froze Venezuelan money in international accounts. The amount was estimated at around $30 billion by 2022, according to former President Nicolás Maduro.

In mid-January, the United States made its first sale of Venezuelan oil.
