Proponents, including the White House, say that permanent daylight saving time would provide more daylight during the times when Americans are most active.
Republican Gus Bilirakis of Florida said that people are ready to “abolish the time change” and that it would give families more time to spend outdoors in the evenings while also benefiting tourism and local businesses.
Opponents believe that ending the time change would lead to potentially more dangerous winter mornings, when children wait for school buses and parents drive to work in the dark.
For the proposal to become a reality, it must also be approved by the Senate.
