Sweden Herald has interviewed Ida Lundkvist, an experienced Urban Hiker to learn more.
Ida Lundkvist, an experienced hiking guide and community lead for Merrell Hiking Club, a collective championing women in the outdoors, comments:
How did your interest in Urban Hiking begin, and what makes it unique compared to traditional hiking?
As head of community for Merrell Hiking Club in Sweden, we've noticed that interest in exploring one's surroundings in a new way has increased. I've always liked hiking in nature. What makes Urban Hiking unique compared to traditional hiking is that it combines culture, history, and architecture with physical activity. It's also more accessible – you don't need a car to get to a starting point, and you can explore a city at your own pace, anytime. I always look for routes where I'm surrounded by nature, which is definitely possible to find even in the city.
What do you think is behind the growing popularity of Urban Hiking?
There are several factors contributing to the growing popularity of Urban Hiking. Partly, more people have started appreciating the proximity to their own cities, especially after the pandemic when travel opportunities were limited. Additionally, it's an activity that suits all ages and requires minimal equipment. Urban Hiking is also a sustainable alternative to traditional tourism – you can experience a place in depth without having to travel far.
How do I get started with Urban Hiking? Do I need any special equipment?
It's very easy to get started with Urban Hiking! All you really need is comfortable shoes and a willingness to explore. A water bottle, a backpack, and maybe a map or a navigation app can also be useful. It can be fun to have a theme for your hike, such as following historical trails, discovering street art, or visiting the city's green areas.
Are there any special routes in Sweden that you recommend?
Yes, Sweden has many fantastic routes for Urban Hiking! Some favorites are:
- Stockholm: A hike from Gamla Stan via Södermalm's heights to Tantolunden offers a perfect blend of history, architecture, and nature.
- Gothenburg: Walking from Haga through Linnéstaden and up to Ramberget offers both cozy neighborhoods and a fantastic view of the city.
- Malmö: A route from Västra Hamnen through Möllan and Pildammsparken shows the city's modern and multicultural side.
- Uppsala: A stroll along Fyrisån and up to Uppsala Castle combines history with scenic views.
How can Urban Hiking affect health, well-being, and a more sustainable lifestyle?
Urban Hiking has many positive effects on both body and mind. It's an easy way to get exercise in daily life, while reducing stress and increasing creativity. Discovering new places and details in your own city can give a sense of adventure and presence. Additionally, it's a sustainable way to travel and experience your surroundings without leaving a large carbon footprint.
Do you have a favorite memory or a special experience from an Urban Hiking tour that you can share?
One of my favorite places is walking along the cliffs at Brunnsviken, and if you continue along the trails beside the water, you'll eventually come to a cozy little café. I usually take a dip at the cliffs and just sit and enjoy the view. Walking or running along Årstaviken is also wonderful.
We at Sweden Herald would like to thank Ida for the interview and for sharing her experience and knowledge about Urban Hiking.
