Change the denomination kopiika to shah, for the Ukrainian equivalent of the Swedish öre. This is the intention behind a bill from Ukraine's central bank (NBU).
"It's time to restore Ukraine's monetary sovereignty", NBU has motivated the reform proposal, writes Dagens industri.
The Ukrainian currency is called hryvnia, and one hryvnia corresponds to one hundred kopiika. But the name of the lower unit has Russian roots and is considered by NBU as "a symbol of Moscow's occupation".
To strengthen the country's independence and national traditions, NBU wants to change from kopiika to shah, a name that has been used previously in history.
The bill is now being processed by Ukraine's parliament. If it is adopted, both kopiika coins and the new shah coins will be accepted initially.
