"We will discuss what we can do to stop the killing and give people the food they so desperately need," says Britain's Prime Minister Keir Starmer in a statement.
The countries are to take all measures to ensure a lasting peace, according to Starmer.
"A ceasefire will take us in the direction of recognizing Palestine as a state and a two-state solution that guarantees peace and security for Palestinians and Israelis," he continues.
147 of the UN's 193 member states, including Sweden, have recognized Palestine as an independent state. France made the decision to do so in May this year but will formally announce its decision at the UN General Assembly in September, says President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday evening.
”The acute need today is for the war in Gaza to end and for the civilian population to be saved,” the president writes on X.
The announcement that the decision will be formally announced has received mixed reactions.
Israel's Vice Prime Minister Yariv Levin describes it as "direct support for terrorism" while the Palestinians' President Mahmud Abbas welcomes the announcement.
