The two men, who are Afghan citizens but reside in Germany, were arrested in March last year. They had then made several failed attempts to acquire weapons for the planned terrorist attack in Sweden.

According to the prosecutor, the men have connections to the Afghanistan-based IS Khorasan and were in close contact with the terrorist group about carrying out an attack on the Riksdag as revenge for the Quran burnings in Sweden.

Now, a court in the city of Jena in Thuringia has sentenced the men to prison, which Sveriges Radio Ekot was the first to report on.

"Kill police officers"

The older of the men, a 30-year-old who during the trial admitted to the terror plans, is sentenced to five and a half years in prison.

The other man, a 24-year-old, is sentenced to four years and two months in prison.

According to a press release from the court, the men have been sympathizing with IS since at least 2023.

The German prosecutor's office has previously described in a press release that the men's plan was to "near the Swedish Riksdag, kill police officers and other people with firearms".

The men were willing to die themselves and, among other things, made searches on the internet about the area around the Riksdag building and about trips to Stockholm.

Attempted to buy weapons

The attack was, according to the verdict, to take place sometime after October 2023.

In September of the same year, the intelligence service followed the men when they went to a market in the Czech Republic where weapons were traded.

The men did not get any weapons, but on the way back, they were stopped by border police, who found a knuckle iron in the car and confiscated the men's mobile phones. The phones later turned out to contain detailed communication with suspected IS contacts.

According to the court, it is clear that the men after the failed trip counted on trying again.

Corrected: In an earlier version of the text, there was an incorrect statement about the relationship between the convicted.
