The find was made in a residential area in Sandnes, southern Norway, last Tuesday, in connection with excavation work. A black garbage bag contained a large amount of banknotes.
The forensic investigation is now complete, the police announced.
"The money has been counted. The total amount is a little over two million kroner," police prosecutor Isa Linn Ravndal said in a press release.
At first, the money was suspected to have originated from the so-called Nokas robbery, the largest robbery in Norwegian history. During the robbery of Norsk kontantservice (Nokas) in Stavanger in 2004, the robbers made off with just over 57 million Norwegian kroner, most of which has never been recovered.
"Parts of the banknotes are of more recent date, which means that it is not money from the Nokas robbery," Ravndal said.
Where the money came from is still unclear, according to police.
