The American people will feel the impact of the upcoming trade tariffs, states President Donald Trump. At the same time, Canada is raising the tone.

The trade tariffs against Canada, Mexico, and China will be felt in the USA.

"Will it hurt? Yes, maybe (but maybe not!)", Trump writes in capital letters on his platform Truth Social. He continues: "it will be worth it" and "the result will be spectacular".

In a later post, he reiterates his previous views that Canada should become the 51st state of the USA and that the northern neighbor "would cease to be a functioning nation" if the USA stopped "subsidizing" the country by buying its goods.

"We don't need any of what they have", he writes.

But Canada responds that the country doesn't need American goods. The province of Ontario – the country's most populous with cities like Toronto – will stop selling US-made alcohol from Tuesday.

"There has never been a better opportunity to choose outstanding Ontario-made or Canadian products. As always, please drink responsibly", writes Ontario's governor Doug Ford on X.

In the province, all alcohol is sold through the state-owned LCBO. According to Ford, the company sells American products worth approximately 8 billion kronor annually.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had then urged his fellow citizens on X to shop locally:

"Check the labels. Let's do what we can. When possible, choose Canadian".
