The move benefits Silicon Valley companies that oppose various state regulations. Critics say it strengthens the power of tech companies and increases the risks of surveillance and algorithmic control, as well as the harms of AI for children and vulnerable groups.
The order targets, among other things, laws in California and Colorado that require, for example, risk assessments for algorithmic discrimination in employment.
Trump claims that uniform rules are needed for the United States to continue to be a world leader in AI and to stop "woke" states from influencing the technology.
The order has no formal legal force, but it does mean that a federal task force will challenge state AI laws.
