According to Trump, the Iranian-flagged cargo ship Touska attempted to break through a U.S. blockade on Iranian ships, but was stopped.
Trump wrote on Truth Social that after a warning, the military fired on the ship, "blew a hole into the engine room," and then seized it.
"We have full control of the vessel and are investigating what is on board," Trump wrote.
No clear message
According to AFP, the ship came from Malaysia and was heading towards Iran. According to Marine Traffic, which monitors maritime traffic, the Touska was reportedly outside the city of Chabahar in southern Iran hours before the attack.
Iran has not commented on the incident, nor has it officially said whether it intends to send a delegation to talks with the United States in Pakistan this week. According to AFP, state television said Iran "has no plans at the moment to participate," citing sources.
The state-controlled Fars and Tasnim news agencies said earlier on Sunday that Iran had not made a decision. "The country would not send a delegation as long as the US blockade continues," they said at the time, without giving a definitive statement.
Violation of the ceasefire
Trump said earlier in the day that Iran fired in the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, calling it a "total violation of our ceasefire agreement."
On Wednesday, the U.S. began a blockade of ships from Iranian ports to put pressure on the country. On Friday, Iran opened the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway crucial to the world economy, then declared it closed again the next day.
However, the strait remained open until Israel and the United States began the Iran War on February 28. The Iranian regime responded by restricting traffic in the strait.
The ceasefire between the parties expires on Wednesday.
