Trump Pressures Fed to Cut Rates as Powell Stands Firm on Inflation

USA's President Donald Trump is urging Jerome Powell, the head of the US central bank (Fed) to lower the country's interest rate and to "stop playing politics". But Powell shows no signs of wanting to obey.

Trump claims, in a post on his social media platform Truth Social, a number of reasons that, in his opinion, speak in favor of lowering the interest rate from today's interval of 4.25-4.50 percent.

"Lower the interest rates, Jerome, and stop playing politics!", Trump writes in his characteristic style with capital letters.

The post came ahead of a speech by Powell. When the Fed chief opened his mouth, he emphasized, as so often before, that the fight against inflation is the most important.

He also pointed out that Trump's new import tariffs against a long list of countries were higher than expected and that they will likely fuel inflation and reduce GDP growth.

"Very uncertain prospects"

Powell also hinted that the interest rate will not be lowered until the effects have clarified, and that Trump's tariff policy has given "very uncertain prospects", reports CNBC.

In another post on Truth Social, Trump claims that his tariff policy will never be changed.

In the post, Trump addresses "the many investors who come to the United States and invest massive amounts of money".

"My policy will never be changed. This is a fantastic time to get rich, richer than ever before!!!".

China has responded

The statement came as stock markets around the world fell sharply after Trump's tariff move on Wednesday evening Swedish time.

Several countries have already taken countermeasures in the form of retaliatory tariffs, and markets fear that a full-scale global trade war has begun.

China responded on Friday by imposing an additional 34 percent tariff on goods from the USA.

On Truth Social, Trump writes that China panicked and made a mistake.

"The one thing they can't afford to do!" he writes about Beijing's response.
