The US President Donald Trump's government is freezing a multi-billion investment in infrastructure in Chicago. It is the government's latest action against Democrat-controlled regions since the government apparatus was shut down earlier in the week.

In total, it's about 2.1 billion dollars, equivalent to nearly 20 billion kronor, announces the White House's budget chief Russ Vought. The stopped funds concern, among other things, the refurbishment and expansion of one of Chicago's most trafficked train lines.

Vought presented on Wednesday a similar budget brake for New York. There, it's about 18 billion dollars for a new train tunnel under the Hudson River and expansion of the subway.

Both Chicago and New York are governed by Democrats. The messages come at the same time as the US government apparatus has been shut down after Congress has not been able to agree on a new budget.

Chuck Schumer, New York politician and group leader for the Democrats in the Senate, calls in a statement the Trump administration's actions as "crazy and counterproductive", as it threatens thousands of jobs and regional and national growth.
