Russian Gazprom has stopped delivering gas to Moldova since Ukraine refused to renew an agreement with Moscow to be a transit country for energy transport, while Russia has claimed that bills have not been paid.
Moldova, which is increasingly leaning towards the EU, has, with the union's help, supplied Transnistria with energy to support the suffering civilian population as the power shortage has been extensive.
Transnistria is now declining further support worth approximately 675 million kronor from the EU through Moldova. Instead, an agreement has been reached with Russia, which will pay for gas deliveries through a Hungarian company – which in turn operates through agents in Dubai.
Sweden announced on Monday that it will provide 100 million kronor to an energy vulnerability fund to support Moldova.
