The former leader of the Finnish Christian Democrats has been convicted after being acquitted in two lower courts.
Finland's Attorney General took the case to the Supreme Court for a guiding ruling. In a divided decision, the court voted to convict her, by three judges to two, HBL reports.
The court weighed a series of statements made by Päivi Räsänen about homosexuals. The Supreme Court found that political writings in which Räsänen described homosexuality as a disorder and sexual deviation constituted incitement. She was acquitted of many other statements. The penalty is a daily fine.
The 66-year-old led the Christian Democrats from 2004 to 2015 and has been a member of the Finnish Parliament since 1995. She was Minister of the Interior from 2011 to 2015.
