The statue was unveiled during a ceremony in a park in Brownsville – a town with about 9,000 inhabitants about ten miles northeast of Memphis – where the American rock queen grew up before she became a Grammy-winning singer and one of the world's most famous and popular artists.
As a teenager, she attended high school just a stone's throw from the place where the statue now stands.
The artwork depicts Turner with her characteristic wild hairstyle and with a microphone in her hand. The statue is designed by Fred Ajanogha who says he has tried to capture Turner's mobility on stage.
Tina Turner died at the age of 83 in her home outside Zurich on May 24, 2023, after a long illness.
