By requiring telecommunications operators to stop suspicious calls and text messages, the government wants to tackle fraud.

In 2023, around 29,000 telephone fraud cases were reported to the police, involving both calls and text messages. The total criminal proceeds from these frauds amounted to over SEK 700 million, according to a press release from the Ministry of Finance.

But with the proposal, the government wants to put an end to this. Among other things, it is proposed that telecommunications operators should “be obliged to stop calls and messages that are suspected of being used for fraud, or to mislead a larger group of recipients.”

The assessment on which this is based shall be based on "technical information such as deviating traffic patterns or certain reported sender information".

"Fraud particularly affects the elderly very hard, while it is a major source of income for criminal gangs. With these proposals, we can stop more fraud attempts before they reach the recipient. This increases security for both private individuals and companies," says Minister of Civil Affairs Erik Slottner (KD) in the press release.

The new rules are proposed to come into force on August 1 next year.
