Gais star Gustav Lundgren was behind the decisive 3-2 goal against Poland that took the Swedish football team to the World Cup.
A goal that could affect his own club team if the midfielder is selected for Sweden's World Cup squad.
The so-called “rest and release” day, when players selected for the World Cup will be given a break from matches, is on May 25. Five days later, Gais will play Kalmar in the tenth round of the Allsvenskan. It is the last round of the league before the World Cup starts. Malmö FF’s Taha Ali and AIK goalkeeper Kristoffer Nordfeldt could also be affected.
The championship team may be affected
The clubs have the right to ask the Swedish Football Association to move matches if their teams are affected, but the practice since 2010 is that several selected players must be involved for a move to be approved, says Ola Rydén.
You always have the right to apply. But what decision the association then chooses to make remains to be seen.
The World Cup will be played between June 11 and July 19. The group stage ends on June 27. The Allsvenskan, on the other hand, starts on July 4.
– Basically, we can say that it is the clubs that want us to start playing then, taking into account that we have club teams that will qualify for Europe, says Rydén.
One of those teams is Mjällby, who had key player Elliot Stroud selected for Sweden's two crucial World Cup playoff matches. Last year's champion team will play Champions League qualifiers on July 21–22.
Helsingborg moved five matches
It will be up to each club to apply for it, taking into account their overall situation. Is it better to move this match or will it be worse for us? Each club must make that assessment when they have the given conditions, says Rydén.
When team captain Andreas Granqvist played in the European Championship with Sweden in 2021, Helsingborg was approved to move five matches in the Super League.
"That's probably the last thing I can think of right now," says Rydén.
The national teams must report their World Cup squads to the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) by May 30, Sky Sports reports.
