Historically, the number of robins has gone up and down, and the species could recover.
"But it looks worrying", says Thord Fransson, responsible for the Ringing Centre at the Natural History Museum, in a press release.
Even our most common bird, the willow warbler, has significantly decreased in number over many years. The causes may be due to climate changes affecting the birds' breeding season and access to food.
"The number of birds is a sign that something in our environment is changing, and it's important that we continue to research what's happening and why", says Fransson.
The reed warbler, on the other hand, is increasing in number. Previously, it was only found on the continent, but is now established throughout Götaland.
In 2024, 226,000 birds were ringed in the country, the year before 266,000. The top record is 350,000.
