Koné was carried off on a stretcher, but no replay of the incident was shown - common with visibly nasty injuries. Players from both teams looked visibly shaken and immediately raised questions in the media around the world about whether the 24-year-old's World Cup run was already over.
When the injury occurred, Canada already had a solid 3–0 lead. When teammate Nathan Saliba added another goal shortly after, Saliba lifted Koné's jersey into the air.
"It's a huge loss for us. He's going to be fine, we're making sure he gets good doctors and he comes back. Of course he's in our thoughts," said Jesse Marsch after the game.
He is in the hospital preparing for surgery.
Canada won the match 6–0 in the country's first-ever World Cup match victory, thanks in large part to Jonathan David, who scored a hat trick.
In the upcoming matches, Canada will face Switzerland and Qatar will face Bosnia and Herzegovina.
