Despite differences of opinion, the countries managed to agree on an agreement in overtime at the COP30 climate summit in Brazil.

The EU, along with several other countries, wanted to see a roadmap for the phasing out of fossil fuels, but fossil fuels are not mentioned at all in the final text since oil states like Saudi Arabia fought hard to keep them out.

But even though such a roadmap for phasing out is not included in the formal agreement, Brazil supports an initiative outside the UN process that has the support of around 90 countries. A similar plan exists for deforestation.

At the meeting, the countries agreed to triple the financing of developing countries' climate adaptation, but the goal has been postponed by five years - to 2035.

Pressure to address the huge gap between the emission reductions that countries have committed to and what is actually required to exceed the 1.5 degree target as little as possible had less results than many countries had hoped.

A way to speed up measures against the deficit will be presented at next year's COP.
