Today, DNA data from people convicted of serious crimes is purged from police records ten years after the sentence has been served if the person has not committed new crimes. The government wants that period to be extended for people convicted of certain serious crimes and who are the subject of an investigation, reports P3 Nyheter.
"Evidence is saved so that we can get a hit in the future if this person were to commit a new crime," Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer (M) said on the radio.
The investigation will review which crimes the changes will apply to and how long the DNA data can be saved.
The investigation is due to be completed in September next year.
