The Intolerance Study is one of the initiatives in the government's new action plan against racism and hate crimes, which was presented on Friday.
The purpose is to be able to follow the development over time and make better and more targeted initiatives.
The study, which will be conducted by the Living History Forum, will cover attitudes towards vulnerable groups such as Afro-Swedes, Jews, Muslims, Roma and Sami people.
Focus on hate crimes
A special study of students' attitudes towards intolerance will be conducted in schools.
Several reports have recently shown that racism and discrimination, unfortunately, are part of many children's and young people's daily lives in school, says Minister for Social Affairs Jakob Forssmed (KD).
The goal of the government's new action plan is a society free from racism.
The plan includes several sub-goals and four focus areas – school, judiciary, working life, and public activities. Sub-goals will be linked to these and several authorities will be involved, including the National Board of Health and Welfare, the Work Environment Authority, and the police.
For example, the government wants the judiciary to take a firm stance against hate crimes.
The goal is for a larger proportion of hate crimes to be reported, investigated, and prosecuted, says Forssmed.
The action plan covers all types of racism, but has a special focus on anti-Semitism, anti-Ziganism, anti-Muslim and anti-Black racism, as well as racism against Sami people.
"Government product"
As early as in the budget bill for 2024, the government announced an enhancement of the work against racism.
The government's cooperation party, the Sweden Democrats, did not participate when the action plan was presented.
This is because they are not part of the government and this is a government product, it's not a Tidöpunkt, says Paulina Brandberg.
The study on Swedish school students' attitudes towards intolerance will be presented on March 1, 2026.
The study on the Swedish population's attitudes towards intolerance will be completed on March 1, 2027.
