The agreement involves a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 90 percent by 2040, compared to 1990. It is a step towards the previously established goal of having a climate-neutral EU by 2050.
“The target meets the need for climate action while protecting our competitiveness and security,” says Denmark's Minister for Climate and Energy Lars Aagaard.
The goal of reducing emissions by 90 percent by 2040 was put forward by the European Commission this summer.
