A final agreement on the updated climate target was reached by EU member states and the European Parliament overnight on Wednesday. It is essentially along the lines agreed by member states' climate ministers in early November, ahead of the COP30 climate summit in Brazil.
“One month after COP30, we have turned our words into action,” writes European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in a press release .
The climate target includes the possibility of counting measures that reduce emissions in countries outside the EU, but only to a maximum of 5 of the 90 percent. The EU's goal has previously been to be climate neutral by 2050.
