Thailand's constitutional court voted unanimously to investigate Paetongtarn Shinawatra. She will be suspended from her duties in the meantime.
The verdict has come and I accept the court's decision, says Paetongtarn to reporters outside the government office.
The investigation comes after a phone call between Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Cambodia's former leader Hun Sen was leaked. In the conversation, the Thai leader is heard discussing the ongoing border conflict with Cambodia. She calls the country's former leader Hun Sen "uncle" and refers to the military chief in northeastern Thailand as her "opponent", which has received harsh criticism in a Thailand where the military still has great influence.
One of the parties in Paetongtarn Shinawatra's government coalition has turned its back on her and accused her of currying favor with Cambodia. This has meant that the prime minister now only has fragile support in the national assembly.
Over the weekend, thousands of demonstrators gathered on the streets of Bangkok to demand the prime minister's resignation.
Paetongtarn Shinawatra is also the subject of an investigation by the country's anti-corruption commission.
