When Norway reaches the World Cup for the first time in 27 years, it should be celebrated. Tens of thousands of fans met the Norwegian football masters in central Oslo on Monday evening. It's wonderful to be a part of this, says superstar Erling Braut Haaland.

Haaland and the other football heroes landed at Gardermoen at 4 p.m. on Monday and were then driven by bus into town where the Football Association and Oslo Municipality had prepared a big celebration at Rådhusplatsen.

Up to 50,000 people met the players barely a day after Norway secured a place in next year's World Cup by beating Italy 4-1 away from home.

World Cup 1998 last

"It's amazing to see. It's great to be a part of this. It makes me proud to be Norwegian and to represent this team," said Manchester City star Erling Braut Haaland, who scored two goals against Italy, from the city hall balcony.

The last time the Norwegian men's national team reached the World Cup was in 1998, when they reached the round of 16. After Euro 2000, the Norwegian men's team has not reached a major championship until now.

"A thousand thanks"

The turnout in front of the City Hall – with the Norwegian flag projected across the entire facade – showed how much the success was long awaited. The Norwegians braved the November cold to welcome the national team with cheers, fireworks and flags in red, white and blue.

"It's absolutely crazy. To feel this support and love here today, everyone who has come here, it's absolutely fantastic. A thousand, a thousand thanks," said Arsenal star Martin Ødegaard, addressing the crowd.

There have been many tough moments, but we have truly believed in what we have done and we have now received value for that. It is magical.

After the celebration at Rådshusplatsen, the plan was to continue the party at a nightclub in Oslo, where the public was also welcome.
