On Wednesday, it was decided that bathing and swimming in Paris' Canal Saint-Martin would be allowed. The decision was welcomed by students and the general public since temperatures in the capital on Wednesday were above 37 degrees.
The heat is expected to increase further; it could reach 40 degrees in several regions on Sunday. France's national weather agency has issued a heatwave warning for Paris and the eastern parts of the country.
Several locations along the Seine River and surrounding canals are scheduled to open for swimming in July.
Bringing urban bathing forward “is a new way to tackle climate change and adapt the city,” according to Alexandra Cordebard, mayor of Paris' 10th arrondissement.
