The documentary, produced by Swedish Hanna Aqvilin, is about Japanese journalist and activist Shiori Itō, who seeks redress after accusing a powerful media figure of rape. A case Itō won against the man's denials in a groundbreaking civil case in 2019.
The documentary was released last year and has been shown worldwide, but has not premiered in Shiori Itō's home country until now.
Some parts contained video and audio footage that was recorded secretly or intended only for the legal process, leading to significant delays. But last month it was announced that it would finally be shown in Japan after “revisions and adjustments” were made.
"It means a lot to me that the film is now being released in Japan, where I grew up and where I want people to confront this issue," Itō said at an event at a cinema in Tokyo on Friday.
