The cover letter has been replaced by selection questions when applying for vacant positions at the Swedish Prison and Probation Service. The agency says the change is intended to ensure that all candidates have equal opportunities in the application process.

"Government positions are filled based on merit and skill, and we see that the personal letter can contain information that is not relevant in a selection process," says Hanna Frummerin, unit manager in operational HR, on the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's website.

Last year, the Swedish Prison and Probation Service received over 150,000 applications. Several other government agencies have made the same change to reduce lead times and unnecessary administration in the recruitment process.

The recruitment process must constantly be developed to be relevant, meet the needs of the business and be legally secure, says Hanna Frummerin, and continues:

Based on the development of AI and language models, we can no longer rule out that the personal letter will be written by AI, and we foresee that the letter will lose its value in this way.
