We have initiated the process of requesting his extradition, says Vice Chief Prosecutor Charlotta Tanner to the newspaper.
According to Expressen, it was the police in the Turkish city of Ankara that contacted the Swedish police and reported that they had arrested the Swedish man who was internationally wanted.
In the autumn of 2018, a 22-year-old man was shot dead outside a food store in Eskilstuna.
Despite several leads, the police could not link any perpetrator to the crime and the fatal shooting became a so-called cold case.
The turning point came in 2023 when the police, thanks to new technology, got a DNA match on a pair of gloves – and a crucial testimony from a 19-year-old convicted of murder who came forward in exchange for a seven-year sentence reduction.
The 24-year-old was acquitted in the district court, but in March he was sentenced by the court of appeal to seven years in prison. However, before the sentence was enforced, he left Sweden.
The prosecutor cannot say how long it will take to get the man extradited.
