We do not have that as a standpoint. We think that is going too far, says Magnus Därth, CEO of the trade organization Meat and Sausage Enterprises.
There is still a bit left for the proposal, which has strong backing from the European meat lobby and French farmers, to become a reality. First, it must be negotiated as a compromise with the EU member states.
Magnus Därth welcomes parts of the proposal, such as that words like ham, loin or fillet should be reserved for meat products. But also products like chorizo and bacon.
We think it is reasonable to reserve such concepts that are linked to parts of a slaughtered animal to meat. It is logical.
Därth says that words like sausage, burger and bun rather describe a shape more than the content.
We have members who produce both products. You can even buy rice porridge in a sausage.
He believes that there is a chance that the more far-reaching parts of the proposal will be removed in the compromise negotiations.
There is an opportunity to take the chance to clarify this for the consumer. We actually have gaps in the legislation today when it comes to these products, he says.
