Minister for Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard (The Moderate Party) spoke before the UN General Assembly in New York on Thursday night Swedish time. In her speech, Malmer Stenergard emphasized Sweden's stance that the UN must work to put an end to the wars that are ongoing in, among other places, Ukraine and Gaza.

Malmer Stenergard noted that it is not only 80 years since the UN was founded, but also since a Swedish icon with braids and freckles "was born". She means that Pippi Longstocking's fearless way of approaching life should inspire the member countries in a time of challenges "without equal".

Let us use this coincidence as a reminder that we must meet the challenges with boldness and determination.

The Foreign Minister once again confirmed Sweden's position in defending Ukraine's sovereignty in the war against Russia and that the UN should hold Russia accountable.

Russia's war against Ukraine is a blatant violation of the foundation of this organization, she said.

Prior to the opening of the General Assembly, several member countries recognized an independent Palestinian state. Malmer Stenergard has previously said that this can create "a momentum for change".

In parts of Gaza, there is famine, this cannot continue. Israel has the right to defend itself, but must do so in accordance with international law. The way the Israeli government is waging its war is unacceptable, said Malmer Stenergard in the General Assembly.
