Swedish Fans Create Unmatched Atmosphere at European Championship

A yellow wall carries Sweden through the European Championship in football. The audience support is unmatched, the Swedish team means. It's the biggest I've been a part of, says veteran Linda Sembrant.

A long train of blue and yellow fans has marched through the Swiss European Championship venues before all of Sweden's matches: first in Geneva, then Lucerne and most recently in Zurich.

The fans' commitment is something extra this time and the attacking star Fridolina Rolfö just wants more.

It's completely indescribable. We've never had this many fans in place at a championship. It also means that we get an incredible amount of energy. After the match, we get to celebrate with them and feel that they are involved in this, says Rolfö and addresses all those at home in Sweden:

Just come here, it's a people's party!

"Completely magical"

About 8,000 Swedish supporters have seen Sweden's matches on site in Switzerland, according to the Swedish Football Association's estimate. With that support, the national team has also performed at the top: three wins in as many matches before Thursday's quarterfinal in Zurich.

I'm really eternally grateful to everyone who came here. It was completely magical yesterday, to see all the fans and celebrate together with them was very special, says Linda Sembrant the day after the 4–1 win in the group final against Germany.

The 38-year-old center back is doing her ninth and last championship and says that the turnout in Switzerland is unique.

I've never experienced as many people as I did yesterday.

The European Championship in England 2022 was the first championship where the increased interest in Swedish women's football became really clear. But this summer surpasses everything, players and leaders agree.

I've been around for a long time, but this is something completely extra, says assistant national team coach Magnus Wikman.

Last summer

He's doing just like Sembrant his last summer with the team. After the European Championship, he and national team coach Peter Gerhardsson will step down.

What I will miss the most, apart from all the people, is the championships and above all with the audience. The last European Championship was the first where I experienced this away supporters crowd. But this is maybe a level further, when you see these marches before and so on.

Just over 22,500 spectators saw Sweden–Germany at Letzigrundstadion on Saturday. The majority supported Germany, but it wasn't obvious from the sound picture.

I love our fans. Love, love, says team captain Kosovare Asllani.

We have a short side, Germany has the rest. But the Swedish fans are heard the most. They give us so much love and energy.
