USA's Folarin Balogun received a red card in the round of 16 against Bosnia-Herzegovina, but the suspension was later lifted by FIFA - which has led to corruption allegations from several quarters.

Simon Åström believes that it is about the credibility of the sport that FIFA provides an explanation for the cancellation, and the association is seeking answers from FIFA about the background to the decision.

"It is fundamental that the regulations that exist are predictable, transparent and equal for everyone. If a red card that normally leads to a suspension is overturned in the middle of an ongoing championship without there being clarity about why and how the regulations should apply, we think it is very problematic," says Åström.

After the United States' next opponent, Belgium, appealed the controversial decision, FIFA announced on Monday night that the appeal was invalid because Belgium is not a party to the case – meaning Balogun will play tonight's match.

The German Football Association has also demanded that FIFA respond to reports that the suspension was lifted after a conversation between FIFA President Gianni Infantino and US President Donald Trump.

Among the critics is also UEFA. In a press release, they write that the cancellation is “unprecedented” and that it is “incomprehensible and indefensible.”
