The incident is believed to have been an accident and occurred in the northern part of the island of Fogo in the municipality of São Filipe. Several teenagers are among the dead, as the bus trip was privately arranged by a group of schoolchildren.
The bus drove off a nearly 30-meter-high cliff into a rocky ravine. About ten people are being treated in hospital with injuries.
"A real tragedy, the causes of which are still unknown to me. I offer my condolences to the grieving families, the friends of the victims," the president of the archipelago, José María Neves, wrote on Facebook late Saturday.
