The day after the national team camp on Crete in May, Brandt was going to throw away the trash. In his other hand, he was carrying a basil pot with cultivation tips. The focus, however, was too much on the tips and Brandt missed the last step.
The fall resulted in two torn ligaments in the foot.
I had to adapt my training for a while, he says, says Brandt at a press conference during the national team camp in French Font Romeu.
The injury meant that Brandt could not train skate for ten weeks and the preseason had to be adapted.
I thought it was quite tough in the beginning, when you couldn't train at all. But when I got into it and could train on a stationary bike, it became something positive overall. It became something new compared to last season and it has become high quality in what I've done, he says.
Brandt finished in 40th place in the World Cup last year and took his first top ten finish when he finished ninth in the pursuit in Oslo.
Brandt does not present any Olympic Games goals. He is aiming instead to break into the top 30 in the World Cup, something he sees as possible despite the unfortunate injury.
Now that I can anyway be part of and run passes that I've run in previous years and can compare times, I'm in a very good phase, says Brandt.
The World Cup starts in Östersund on November 29.
