Approximately 40 kilometres of fairway will be dredged from summer 2027 to 2030. The volumes correspond to about 23 Avicii arenas (Globen) - the largest dredging project in Sweden in modern times.
The work will make it possible for the Port of Luleå to receive larger ships with a draft of up to 14.7 metres.
When the work is completed in 2030, we will also have a new, wider icebreaker that will be able to handle the new, larger ships, says Erik Eklund, Director General of the Swedish Maritime Administration.
Dredging was paused last year when the bids became too expensive. Since then, new studies have made it possible to reduce the amount to be dredged.
The contract between the Swedish Maritime Administration, the Port of Luleå and the contractor is worth approximately SEK 5.7 billion.
The investment is part of the expansion of the Port of Luleå. The aim is, among other things, to meet increased ore production in the north.
